ICT Fairy Fights #1

IMPORTANT NOTE: This event's format and location has changed. The venue is now located at the Lion's Club building in Oxford, Ks which is about 40 miles southeast of Wichita. This is generally a 35-minute up to about 50-minute drive from the Wichita area depending on your exact location. Because this is a considerably larger commitment for competitors than the previously scheduled venue in Fairmount Park, the event format will now either be round-robin (if 8 robots or less) or double-elimination (if 9 to 16 robots). Each robot is still only allowed to have 3 crew members that will have access to the pit areas. Others who plan only to spectate will be allowed without limitation outside of the pit area so long as we do not exceed the building's maximum practical capacity. In the unlikely event that the capacity would be exceeded by spectators, access to the building is on a first come-first serve basis. The plan is still to hold single-elimination tournaments more locally to Wichita on a semi-regular basis in the future, but we will take feedback from this event to advise future tournament formats and locations.

Keep in mind when designing for this competition that the arena is small at only 2' x 2' and features a spinning arena hazard in one corner that is powered by an Emax 2205 on a 2s lipo. It will not be running at 100% speed, but it is still capable of causing real damage to a fairyweight robot. However, if it becomes damaged, it will likely not be repaired for the remainder of the competition. There will be no pit for tournament fights, but it could be used for grudge matches if both robots agree to it.

- If less than 16 robots are registered by Saturday, February 3rd, I will allow an unlimited number of robots per driver, but keep in mind that you are not guaranteed to not be scheduled to fight your own robot in the first round.

Highlighted Rules

A complete and unique ruleset for this event can be found at the following link (contact team.radius.robotics@gmail.com if the link does not work or you are unwilling to use it): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lVmt9JSaBVZaBh0X-2pC8ngKXUxPIQFi/view?usp=sharing  , but here are a few of the highlights and some additional procedural rules that may make this event different from others:

  • There will be NO weight bonuses of any kind. All robots must weigh 150 grams or less, regardless of their means of locomotion.
  • No 'exotic' weapons will be allowed. This includes (but is not limited to) fire/heat, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
  • Robots must fit fully into a 6" cube ready to fight due to the small size of the arena. For this same reason, pinning will only be allowed for 5 seconds at a time and grapples can last a maximum of 15 seconds.
  • Fights will last for 3:00 but this may be adjusted to 2:00 if there is time pressure.
  • Batteries must be charged in a fire resistant charging bag.
  • Fights that last the full match time will be decided by either one or three judges who will score based on the three standard categories of damage, control, and aggression. However, for this event, each category will be worth only 1 point and fractional points will not be awarded. That is, judges will simply be asked to decide "which robot was more damaging", "which robot was more controlling", and "which robot was more aggressive". Winning at least two out of the three categories will result in a victory. There will be NO TOLERANCE for any harassment of the judges.
  • I (the event organizer) will be competing in the tournament, but I will do my best to ensure that the event is fair for everyone.
  • All robots must use a hobby grade 2.4 Ghz controller. Other controllers may be allowed at the discretion of the event organizer. Please contact team.radius.robotics@gmail.com if you plan to bring a robot that does not use a hobby grade 2.4 Ghz controller.
